Blog - Smoke Machines

Posted: Monday 9th May 2011 By: Andrew Broughton Views: 2001

Smoke machines can produce a great atmosphere at a party, they also help make the disco lights look more impressive. However smoke machines can be a problem for a DJ.

In some venues a smoke machine will trigger the fire alarm. An evacuation of a function room isn't how most people plan their party! Having said that some bridal parties might enjoy the arrival of the local firemen, until the bill from the hotel arrives.

Asthma suffers can be affected by smoke machines if the DJ is trigger happy. And in this day of "compensation for anything" it makes it easier for venue and DJ simply not to bother with the smoke machine. Despite having 10m Public Liability Insurance (PLI), I'd rather not spend the time sorting out all the paperwork.

Although I have a smoke machine the only purpose it has served in the last few years is to gather dust. There are fewer and fewer venues that will allow a DJ to use one, and I can honestly say that I don't miss not using one.
