Blog - Using directories to find DJs

Posted: Sunday 23rd April 2017 By: Andrew Broughton Views: 1089

When searching for a DJ it can be an easy temptation to use directories such as Bark to obtain quotes.

They operate in a similar way to insurance comparison websites. But with one notable difference; DJs have to pay to provide a quote rather than giving commission on a sale.

With price comparison websites they get paid if a customer signs up for the insurance. But with directories they get paid for each response, regardless of whether the customer signs up or not. It doesn't cost the insurance companies anything to provide a quote therefore you get a long list of prices.

But what does this mean for you? It's down to quality and customer service. Many DJs will choose not to pay to provide a quote for a booking they have no idea whether it will become a booking or not.

Think about this from another perspective, would you place items for sale on eBay if you had to pay 5 upfront regardless of the outcome? I know I wouldn't.

Sites such as Bark.com are a very good business model for them to generate money. It doesn't matter to them whether the DJ is any good or whether the client actually books anyone - they've already got their money. As the booking is between you and your DJ it's your problem in their eyes; they've only referred not recommended the supplier.

While it might seem a quick and easy option to use, there's no substitute for proper research. That doesn't mean spending hours trawling through various websites, even a quick Google search will throw up some good results. Personally I'd recommend having a look through the SEDA list.

Ultimately it's up to you whether you want a quick and easy way to get cheap quotes or whether you want to get the DJ you want to create the perfect event.
